Papers consist of financial records, correspondence, re public schools in Charleston, S.C.; other items documenting farming operations on Edisto Island, S.C., and household expenses for this Charleston lawyer. Financial records include an account book (1883-1884) recording expenses for Swallow Bluff Plantation [Edisto Island, S.C.], which also contains accounts with F.M. Mitchell, Jr., Eudora Mitchell, and others; an account book (1875-1878) which includes Julian Mitchell's accounts with the Bank of Charleston; invoices and receipts (1885-1896), mostly for daily expenditures of Julian A. Mitchell for food, taxes, jewelry, shoeing of horses, and other goods and services, as well as his professional services; and tax petitions during Reconstruction (1874). Also included is a letterpress copybook (1870-1874); and papers (1883-1902) pertaining to public schools in Charleston (S.C.) including correspondence; "Specifications of Labor and Materials Requisite and Necessary to Make an Addition to Memminger Normal School" (undated); financial records; a letter (1902) about curriculum at Memminger; resolutions of and a report (1883) to high school trustees; and other items.

Julian A. Mitchell was born on Edisto Island, South Carolina. Mitchell graduated from the College of Charleston (S.C.) in 1855 and was editor (1854-1855) of the College magazine. Mitchell was appointed secretary of the U.S. legation to Russia by President Buchanan in 1860 and returned from that post just after the secession of South Carolina and before the bombardment of Fort Sumter.
